It has been made mandatory for the divorced applicant applying for MHADA to submit the decree certificate at the time of registration. In case of the death of a husband or wife, submission of a death certificate has also been made mandatory. Changes have been made in the computerised system of the draw. The MHADA authority has taken this decision in the background of malpractices such as hiding or giving false information about marriage, spouse's income or divorce by the applicants or winners.
A fixed income limit applies for participation in the MHADA draw. While determining this income limit, family income i.e. income of husband and wife is considered. But often a large number of applicants hide their marriage information or give false information in order to be included in a small or minority group. Often even when the husband and wife are living together, divorce is also reported.

It is also mentioned that the husband or wife is not alive. It has been found that this type of behaviour is being done to buy a house in the desired income group by hiding the information about the income of the husband and wife. Meanwhile, the option to submit decree certificate to divorced applicants and death certificates to applicants whose spouse has died was not yet available in the computerised system. It has come to light in some past draws that many applicants are cheating MHADA by taking advantage of this. The houses of approximately 70 such applicants have been cancelled.
In this background, MHADA has now removed these errors in the computer system. Accordingly, options such as divorced, widow and widower have been made available while filling the application form. A senior officer in MHADA informed that next to these options, there is an option related to submitting the relevant certificate. If the applicant is divorced, it will be mandatory to submit the decree certificate while filling the application. If the husband or wife has died then the concerned applicant will have to attach the death certificate of the deceased spouse. The senior official also informed that this important change will be implemented from the August draw of the Mumbai board. Importantly, unmarried applicants will now also have to attach an affidavit of unmarried status while applying.
