Maharashtra State Child Rights Protection Commission president Susieben Shah has emphasized the need for a dedicated and separate child safety officer at all police stations for their security.
He has urged the police to prioritise the safety of children and take immediate action against those violating their rights.
She made these remarks while speaking at a workshop for police on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and Juvenile Justice Act in Thane on Wednesday, September 25.
Shah also called for a comprehensive audit of government and private schools under the jurisdiction of each police station.
A day later, on Thursday, September 26, the state school education department issued a government resolution (GR) expanding the scope of the committee set up to suggest safety and security measures for schoolchildren in the wake of the sexual assault on two four-year-old girls at a Badlapur school last month. This GR supersedes the earlier one issued on Sept 19.
After Bombay high court had taken suo motu cognisance of the sexual assault incident, the state set up the committee on August 23.
The HC had spelled out the mandate of the 16-member committee and appointed two former judges — Justices (retd) Shalini Phansalka-Joshi and Sadhana Jadhav — to head it. Former IPS officer Meeran Borwankar is also on the panel.
