Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday, June 25, issued instructions to the police to initiate strict action against illegal pubs and bulldoze all structures violating building rules in the state.

"I also directed the police to initiate renewed action against drug peddlers to make Pune a drug-free city," he said while addressing media.

This development came amid the outrage in Pune city over a viral video of a bar in which minors can be seen allegedly consuming drugs in the bar's washroom during a late-night party. 

In the aftermath of the incident, On Tuesday, June 25, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demolished constructions on side and front margins of food joints and bars on FC Road.

According to PMC officials, action was also taken against food joints in Balewadi, Kharadi, Apte Road and Bhandarkar Road. Illegal constructions of 26 food and liquor joints, including L3, spread over 36,000 sq ft were demolished during the action. This was a part of regular anti-encroachment drives.

They had found 89 restaurants operating illegally on rooftops and demolished 53 of them. Operators of six food joints razed properties themselves. Seven eateries were closed. Criminal offences were filed against nine for violation of norms.

For the unversed, on Monday night, June 24, the Pune Police raided and sealed the Liquid Leisure Lounge (L3) for allegedly serving drugs to minors. 

Four police officials have been suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with the incident. The suspended officials include one Assistant Police Inspector, one Police Inspector, and two constables attached to Shivaji Nagar Police Station.

The police have also arrested 8 people in the case, including the owner of the pub. They were produced before a Pune Magistrate court and later sent to police custody till June 29 by the court.
