The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to improve the lighting at Mumbai's iconic and scenic promenade, Marine Drive, to accommodate the daily rush of visitors.

In the next month, 110 LED lights will be installed on the stretch from the Air India building to the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), the report said.

The project, estimated to cost around INR 17 lakh, will involve installing LED fixtures under 55 trees along the promenade. These lights, ranging from 30 to 40 watts, will not only enhance visibility but also contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the area.

Marine Drive is one of the most visited waterways in the city, attracting not only locals for a morning walk but also thousands of tourists and suburbanites who come to enjoy the sea breeze. However, municipal officials have admitted that the existing streetlights on the route are inadequate during major events like cricket matches at the Wankhede Stadium, which attract huge crowds. In such situations, the BMC currently arranges temporary lighting to ensure public safety.

"Since Marine Drive is a popular place, it sees a huge crowd every day. We installed temporary lights during special events like cricket matches, but now we are planning to install permanent LED fixtures under the trees next to the promenade. This will enhance both public amenities and safety," a senior BMC official told The Indian Express.

Marine Drive, constructed in 1915, spans nearly three kilometres with a 20-foot-high wall separating it from the sea. However, the new LED lights will not cover the entire stretch.
