Mumbai rains comeback has delayed the restoration of the historic Carnac Bridge, which will connect Masjid Bandar station and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Owing to this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been unable to secure a six-hour railway mega block to install a crucial girder weighing 550 metric tonnes. The railways have refused to grant the block as authorities are worried about safety during the monsoon.

As a result, the works of the bridge project may not progress until the rainy season. Sources suggest that BMC has made many requests to the railways, asking them to provide the necessary block as soon as possible.

Last month, the BMC completed the beam connection on the east side of the railway track and has already transported the new girder sections to Mumbai. As per sources, one of the bridge's girders is ready for installation, and both girders are expected to be in place by March 2025.

However, the girder installation on the railway tracks has stalled. The girder is 70 meters long and 9.5 meters wide. After the first girder is installed, it will reportedly require a second block of the same length for the installation of the second girder.

The construction process involves lifting and installing massive girders, making it a challenging and complex task. The new bridge will take at least 1.5 years to be operational. The nearly 150-year-old Carnac Bridge was closed because of safety concerns. The bridge was demolished in November 2022, and construction started in 2023.
