Over 2 lakh government jobs are vacant in Maharashtra, revealed the State Government in a response to an application filed under the Right to Information (RIT) Act. However, certain reports claim that the number may be much higher than that because 16 out of the 29 sections have outdated statistics.

Anil Galgali, an RTI activist on June 18, 2021, had filed an RTI application with the state government, seeking information on the vacancies filed with the sanctioned posts in the various state government departments.

According to the information provided by the General Administration Department of the Government of Maharashtra regarding the vacancies in the Government of Maharashtra and Zilla Parishads, the number of vacancies in Group A, B, C and D Categories in the government till December 31, 2019, is 2,00,193. The statistics also ameliorate that the total number of sanctioned posts in the 29 divisions and Zilla Parishads in Maharashtra is 10,99,104, of which 8,98,911 posts have been filled.

These figures provided by the government of the 29 departments are, as of 31 December 2018. Out of these departments, those whose numbers haven't been updated for over three and a half years include four from the Home Department, three from the Revenue and Forest Department, Medical Education and Medicine, Social Justice, Urban Development, Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, Rural Development, General Administration, Soil and Water Conservation, Housing, and Minority Development Department.

Anil Galgali has thus written a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray demanding an immediate filling of the vacancies. He believes that these vacancies affect the functioning which has negative repercussions on the public.
