Mumbai Local News: Borivali, Vasai, Thane, Kalyan reported highest deaths on suburban railway in 2024

Last year, 2,468 people lost their lives in comparison to 2,590 fatalities in 2023. Of the total, 1,151 lost their lives from crossing tracks, which remains the biggest reason for deaths.

While deaths on Mumbai's suburban railway reduced marginally, the number of commuters injured in accidents have increased significantly in 2024.

Last year, 2,468 people lost their lives in comparison to 2,590 fatalities in 2023. Of the total, 1,151 lost their lives from crossing tracks, which remains the biggest reason for deaths.

With this data, it can be considered that six to seven deaths take place daily on an average due to overcrowding, accidents, and other related causes.

It is pertinent to note that over 50,000 fatalities have been recorded in the past 20 years.

A total to 3204 services are being run by both Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR), ferrying 75 lakh passengers daily.

Western Railway:

  • 22,481 people died and 26,572 injured between 2005 till July 2024.
  • The top railway police jurisdictions recording the highest fatalities in the past two years are Vasai and Borivali.
  • Vasai recorded the highest (45) number of deaths due to falling from trains on WR in 2024.
  • Borivali recorded highest fatalities with 137 due to crossing tracks in 2024.
  • Currently, there are 1394 suburban services on Western Railway, carrying 35 lakh passengers daily.

Central Railway:

  • Between 2009 and June 2024, 29,321 people have lost their lives.
  • The top railway police jurisdictions recording the highest fatalities in the past two years include Kalyan, Thane.
  • Kalyan again recorded the highest (116) number of deaths due to falling from trains in 2024.
  • Thane again reported the highest fatalities with 151 due to crossing tracks in 2024.
  • There are 1810 suburban services on CR, carrying 40 lakh passengers.
