In a significant development, RKEC Project Ltd. has secured a contract from the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) to construct the new Radio Club Boat Jetty in Mumbai.

The construction is expected to be completed in 30 months. The new jetty will offer modern amenities and ease the congestion at the Gateway of India, where more than 25 lakh passengers board boats each year.

Once complete, the new jetty will be able to handle 20 boats simultaneously, helping to organise and streamline operations. The project will feature various passenger amenities, including an amphitheatre, ticket counters, a cafeteria, parking facilities, and a landscaped green space. The goal is to improve the experience for both tourists and daily commuters.

The new Radio Club Jetty will allow for more organised boarding and reduce the risk of accidents. It will also improve Mumbai's marine infrastructure. The construction will follow an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model. RKEC will handle the construction phase, while a private firm will be hired later to manage and maintain the facility.

The project was initially valued at INR 165 crore but underwent a rebidding process due to adjustments in construction plans. RKEC secured the contract with a bid of INR 186.67 crore, 6.61% lower than the projection of ₹199.89 crore. The project value was later revised to INR 229.28 crore following a scope change greenlit by the Maharashtra government.

As per reports, the rerouting of boat traffic to the new jetty will protect the Gateway of India from further wear, preserving this historic site. The current Gateway of India location faces congestion due to heavy boat traffic and lacks sufficient infrastructure, leading to safety concerns, especially for elderly passengers.
