Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC)’s health department has launched a 14-day Leprosy Detection Campaign (LCDC) in the district, covering both rural and urban divisions.

The campaign will be conducted from January 31 to February 14, said an official of Thane Zilla Parishad (ZP).

This development came as more than 700 cases of leprosy have been registered in Thane district between nine months in 2024.

As per the data released by the district official on Thursday, January 30, 711 leprosy cases were registered in the district between April and December 2024.

The initiative aims to identify and diagnose suspected leprosy cases through extensive search teams, ensuring that detected patients receive immediate multi-drug treatment.

Moreover, the objective of the campaign is to identify undiagnosed leprosy cases, initiate timely treatment, and curb the spread of the disease by breaking the chain of infection.

Experts exclaimed that many patients tend to ignore the disease due to the absence of pain, delaying necessary medical intervention.

Besides, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) organised several activities to raise awareness about leprosy and contribute to the eradication of the disease, in observance of January 30, which is marked as Leprosy Eradication Day on Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary.

In line with the Central Government's guidelines, PMC will also conduct a special leprosy detection campaign from January 31 to February 14. During this period, a survey will be carried out to identify and treat as many leprosy patients as possible, providing them with free treatment immediately.
