Stating that the road to 'Viksit Bharat' passes through 'Viksit Ports', Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais stressed the importance of developing the ports of India. 

The Governor was speaking on the occasion of the 35th Foundation Day of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at a programme in Mumbai on Wed (29 May). Memoranda of Understanding between JNPA and PSA and between JPNA and CMACGM for the development of Greenfield Port at Wadhwan were signed in presence of the Governor.


Over the last 35 years, Jawaharlal Nehru has emerged as the leading container port in the country and has established itself as a major port in global trade with its sophisticated infrastructure, advanced technological capabilities and strategic initiatives. The Governor said that Jawaharlal Nehru Port has ensured efficient movement of goods and thus boosted the industrial development of Maharashtra.


The governor said that about 25% of the total revenue from customs comes from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority alone, while more than 50% of the country's container handling is done through this port, which proves how important the port's contribution to the country's industrial development is.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port has created many employment opportunities. The governor said that as the chancellor of 28 universities in the state, he is appealing to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority to develop cooperation with universities in the state.


The Governor felicitated the representatives of Public Private Partnership (PPP) and officials of JNPA on the occasion. The Governor released the Coffee Table Book and the Special Edition on the 35th Anniversary of JNPA brought out by Bhandarkar Publications. A Special Cover and Corporate Customized My Stamp of JNPA was also released on the occasion.

Chairman of Mumbai Port Authority Rajiv Jalota, Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Sethi, Chief Commissioner of Customs Rajesh Pandey, Chief Post Master General Maharashtra Kishan Kumar Sharma, Chairman of JNPA Unmesh Sharad Wagh, General Manager and Secretary Manisha Jadhav and Officers and staff of JNPA and invitees were present.
