In early 2018, the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal was considered a major political scandal when it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica had harvested the personal data of millions of Facebook accounts without their consent and used it for political purposes.

A case of hacking took place in Mumbai, where Bandra police arrested a man who hacked Whatsapp and Facebook profiles.

On Thursday, Bandra Police arrested a 23-year-old from Jodhpur in Rajasthan for allegedly hacking into dozens of Whatsapp and Facebook profiles. Earlier, the arrested accused, Diptesh Salecha, had been arrested by Pune and Nashik police on similar charges. Three cases have been registered against the accused in Mumbai, at Bandra, Versova and Borivali police stations.

Senior police inspector Girish Vishnu Anavkar of Bandra police station said that he is a Std X dropout, but has excellent knowledge of information technology (IT), which he uses to commit such cyber offences.

PSI Sachin Chaudhry who is the investigating officer, in this case, said that it was very difficult to crack this case because they didn't have any IP address. They, therefore, used his trick and chatted with him on Instagram to get the IP address.

The accused hacked into accounts by managing to get hold of one-time passwords (OTP) that were used for account verifications on the web. He used to then send obscene messages from the hacked accounts to people. He also obtained victims’ contacts and extorted money from them.

DCP Zone IX Paramjit Singh Dahiya said that accused was booked under section 500 (punishment for defamation), and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the IT Act.
