In the last 13 days, Mumbai Police have registered cases against 1330 citizens for not wearing masks at public places. No wearing a mask in public places is a violation of the order issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Wearing face masks in public places was made compulsory in Mumbai on April 8, 2020. This was done with the view of controlling the spread of Coronavirus or COVID-19 in the city. In the entire country, Maharashtra has emerged as the worst-hit state and as per the numbers released by BMC, there are currently 3,032 people who have in view of the surge in the number of coronavirus positive cases in Mumbai, which is worst-hit by the outbreak.
At the time of making mask compulsory, BMC had warned that it will be taking serious action against those violating this rule under section 188 (Disobedience to the order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
BMC official has said that till Monday (20 April) night, Mumbai Police had booked 1,330 people for not following this order. Furthermore, most of these cases are registered in Central, West and North Mumbai regions.
Wearing a mask is mandatory in all public places that include streets, markets, hospitals and even workplaces. It is not compulsory to buy masks, one can even make masks out of paper and wear.
Another offence that BMC is taking really seriously is spitting in public spaces. The fine for spitting in public spaces has been increased from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 since the coronavirus outbreak.
