While earlier colleges affiliated with the University of Mumbai were asked to display their names in Marathi, the trend has rippled to schools in Mumbai. According to the latest reports, an Education Officer from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a circular, asking schools in the city to display their names in Marathi, on Tuesday, April 5.
Based on accounts, the circular by the civic body's education department added that all schools (aided, unaided, state, non-state boards) should display their names in bold letters in Marathi on board. Apart from writing their names in the Devnagari script, they have also been told to encourage the use of Marathi in their functioning.

The circular is reportedly signed by the BMC Education Officer, Raju Tadvi. The said phenomenon has been a long pending demand of the young wing of Shiv Sena, Yuva Sena. The youth wing had recently commenced a campaign to provide an elite status to Marathi and thus, wrote the Mumbai University's administrations and the BMC's education department regarding the same.
This demand was positively responded to by the BMC which issued a government resolution (GR) on Tuesday remarking that nameplates of adequate size should be in Marathi. These signboards have to be 8×3 feet in size with viability outside school.
Earlier, the Maharashtra government had also made it mandatory for shops and establishments in the state to have their nameplates in Marathi.
