The University Grants Commission (UGC) monitors all the universities across the country. The Commission verifies the authenticity of universities and keeps an eye on their functioning. Every academic year, UGC releases a list of eligible universities and their programmes.
This academic year, after they released the list of distance education institutes, Mumbai University’s Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) wasn’t included in the list. This raised worries amongst the concerned students regarding the elimination of the MU programme.
Mumbai University had formed the IDOL programme to assist students who were unable to attend regular lectures or were working along with their studies. The institute is a shelter of learning to more than 80,000 students every year in various courses.
When the students did not find IDOL’s name in the list by UGC, a situation of panic arose and lakhs of students were concerned about their education. But on August 13, the Commission wrote a letter to MU stating that no IDOL course or curriculum has been cancelled.
UGC stated that there were some errors in the IDOL courses and UGC has given a month’s time to Mumbai University to fix the problems.
Regarding this, information will be put up on UGC’s official website on August 16.
