On Monday, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Puri released the list of garbage-free cities in the country and for the second consecutive year, Navi Mumbai received a five-star rating in the list. Along with the township, Indore, Mysore, Ambikapur, Surat and Rajkot also received five stars.
“Navi Mumbai is the only city from Maharashtra to get a five-star rating. The credit goes to each citizen who helped us achieve this and sanitation workers who kept the city clean,” Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Annasaheb Misal said.
The initiative, Star Rating Protocol, was launched by the Union Ministry in January 2018 to motivate the cities to achieve the best possible results in terms of cleanliness.
NMMC Commissioner Annasaheb Misal further added that the government officials had made a surprise visit to Navi Mumbai to check the garbage collection and disposal system. He said that they also spoke to the citizens to know whether the system was efficient or not. The officers would award points to each ward on 24 different parameters of solid waste management.
The rating is given on the basis of solid waste management and sanitation. This consists of marking on the cleanliness of drains and water bodies, plastic waste management, and managing construction and demolition waste.
In Maharashtra, Navi Mumbai was the only city with five-star ratings whereas 34 cities from the state, including Chandrapur, Dhule, Jalgaon, Jalna, Thane and Mira-Bhayander, were awarded three stars. 41 cities, consisting of Ahmednagar, Akola, Nashik, Vasai-Virar and Kalyan-Dombivli, were able to only score one-star ratings. A total of 1,435 urban local bodies from the state had applied for the assessment.
According to the 2020 survey, six cities received five stars, 65 cities three stars, and 70 cities one star. The government was able to go ahead with the plan with the help of 1.19 crore citizen responses, over 10 lakh geo-tagged pictures, and visits to 5,175 solid waste processing plants.
