Maharashtra’s COVID-19 death toll since the beginning of August has crossed the 25 per cent mark as per data provided by the state. Maharashtra leads in terms of COVID-19 fatalities in India, with the number breaching the 20,000 mark and showing no signs of slowing down. The tally now stands at 20,037.

Between the 1st of August and Sunday 16th August, the state reported 5,043 deaths, amounting to 25.17 per cent of the state’s overall deaths since the pandemic began in March. This effectively means that a quarter of the state’s COVID-19 deaths were reported in just over two weeks.

However, the figure remains low in comparison to July which saw 35.62 per cent of the overall COVID-19 deaths. Health Department officials and experts have mentioned that COVID-19 fatalities are expected to increase over the coming days as the second wave of the infection hits Maharashtra.

This makes social distancing and wearing of masks in public even more crucial, especially if citizens are heading out for essential shopping. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has mentioned that the State will ease lockdown norms in districts and impacted regions in a phased manner.

Dr Shashank Joshi who is a member of the 11-member task force set up by the State to manage COVID-19 patients said that the spike in cases is mostly due to the increase in testing across Maharashtra.

“Maharashtra’s viral caseload is at its peak, which will continue over the next few days before the situation stabilises. Mumbai’s case fatality rate (CFR) has come down significantly. The aim is to bring it down the CFR below 1 per cent across Maharashtra,” he said.

The Union Ministry of Health has announced that India has surpassed 3 crore COVID-19 tests, putting the country among the top 5 nations that have conducted the most tests. However, it is important to note that the tests conducted are low relative to the population, an area where countries like the U.S. and Germany are dominating.
