On Wednesday, December 22, Maharashtra recorded a significant surge in COVID-19 cases with 1,201 new cases being reported in the last 24 hours, stated reports.
According to accounts, with these numbers, Maharashtra's tally has crossed the 1,000 threshold for the first time since November 17. Based on the government's health bulletin update, the test positivity rate is at 0.98 per cent. 1,23,261 samples have been tested during the said period.

It was back on November 9 that Maharashtra had touched the 1 per cent positivity rate mark. On the other hand, Mumbai reported 490 new COVID-19 cases. Whilst this was an increase of over 160 in contrast to the previous day, no fatalities were recorded owing to the novel virus on Wednesday.

Maharashtra continues to be amongst the top contributors of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in India. In accordance with the latest available numbers, the state has detected 65 cases of the reportedly highly transmissible variant. Of these, 11 were confirmed on Tuesday, December 21.
Similarly, Maharashtra recorded eight more fatalities, taking the death figures to 1,41,375. Nearly, 953 individuals recovered from coronavirus. This has taken the tally to 64,99,760.
