Maharashtra has reported a 57 per cent rise in the dengue cases so far in 2023. In the first five months, that is between January to May, 1,237 cases of dengue have been recorded.
Of the total, Mumbai accounted for 27 per cent and is a major contributor to the disease compared to other districts.

Out of the 1,237 dengue cases, 458 were from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Mumbai (335), Palghar (112) and Thane (11) collectively reported 37 per cent of the total cases.
It is pertinent to note that these figures of mosquito menace have been witnessed came quite before the arrival of monsoon season.
Meanwhile, during the same period last year, the state saw nearly 807 cases.
According to state health department data in 2021, Maharashtra reported 12,720 confirmed cases of dengue and 42 related deaths. In 2022, the state reported 8,578 cases and 27 deaths, an over 40 per cent drop. However, in the first five months of the current year, the state has reported over 1,237 confirmed cases of dengue.
Health department has attributed the increase to the unusual rainfall this year in some parts of the state. However, no casualties have been reported so far.
On the other hand, the state government has claimed that it has succeeded in controlling the epidemic diseases of dengue and chikungunya in two years under the National Pest Control Programme. Both dengue and chikungunya epidemics have declined. Similarly, there is a decrease in death.
