Brain death occurs when brain activity stops permanently, even as the heart continues to beat. This condition often results from severe trauma or brain injury. Each organ donor can give life to eight people, while tissue donations greatly enhance the quality of life.
Public hospitals managed a high number of trauma cases. However, they have struggled with organ transplants. Recently, they have started taking steps to improve their contribution.
The state government announced a policy in 2024 to equip 25 state medical colleges with critical care units (CCUs) and train staff to boost organ donation. This includes developing JJ Hospital and six other Mumbai medical institutions as nodal transplant centers.
KEM Hospital also hired three critical care specialists to find donors in intensive care units (ICUs).
