The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved changes to the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. The project involves building twin tunnels under the slopes of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). The civic body has decided to shift the tunnels 600 meters away from the planned location near Habale Pada.

The change came after tribal groups raised concerns about the impact of the tunnels on their land and livelihoods. The tunnels will now avoid tribal farmlands in Film City, Goregaon East.

However, this realignment has added INR 250 crore to the project cost. The original estimate was INR 6,301 crore. The revised cost has been approved by the administration.

The construction of the tunnels is set to begin in March 2025. A tunnel boring machine will be imported from China to start excavation. The twin tunnels are expected to be completed by October 2028.

The BMC has also hired the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) for a third-party safety audit. This audit will make sure that the design and construction meet safety standards.

Details of GMLR Project?

- The GMLR project will connect the Eastern Express Highway in Mulund with the Western Express Highway in Goregaon.

- The total road length is 12.2 kilometres, and the tunnel's length is 4.7 kilometres.

- Once completed, the project will decrease travel time between Mulund and Goregaon from 1.25 hours to just 25 minutes.
