Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is set to build 950 affordable houses in Powai and Virar. The houses which will be constructed in Powai will have area of more than 550 square feet and each will cost between ₹60 lakh to ₹70 lakh.
In Virar, the houses will have an area of more than 425 sq ft and the units will cost ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh. MHADA President Uday Sawant informed that the proposal was passed during a meeting on Tuesday.
We will construct 450 houses in Powai and 500 in Virar under the MHADA affordable housing scheme. The houses will be sold through the lottery system and we have already reduced the prices," said Sawant.
Earlier, MHADA's houses in Powai were priced for ₹1 crore and the same was priced for more than ₹18 lakh in Virar.

In June this year, more than 66,000 people applied for only 217 houses in a lottery carried out by MHADA's Mumbai board. In 2018, MHADA received 1.64 lakh applications for 1m395 houses whereas, in 2017, more than one lakh people filed application for 819 houses.
