The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has finally opened bids for six major infrastructure projects. These projects will reduce traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Most of the projects are in Thane.
Tenders for these projects were floated months ago, but the bids were opened on Tuesday, July 16.
1. A creek bridge from Gaimukh on Godbunder Road, Thane, to Payegaon on Chinchoti-Anjur Phata Road. This project will cost around INR 4.64 crore.
2. An 8.5-kilometre elevated road in Thane city from Anand Nagar to Saket on the Eastern Express Highway, costing approximately INR 12.80 crore.
3. The third phase of the Airoli Katai Naka Elevated Corridor is a noteworthy project that is estimated to cost INR 9.43 crore.
4. It will cost INR 7.26 crore to build a stream bridge in Thane that connects Kasarvadavli and Kharbav.
5. The Thane Coastal Road project will extend 13 kilometres in length in Thane, from Balkum to Gaimukh.
6. Building a 13-km Thane Coastal Road project from Balkum to Gaimukh and an 8.5-km elevated road in Thane city from Anand Nagar to Saket on the Eastern Express Highway.
These projects were awarded to Navyuga, Afcons, Ashoka Buildcon, Apco Infratech Pvt., and J. Kumar as the winning bidders.
The MMRDA will proceed with bidder identification and technical assessments. After the review, the proposals would be submitted to the state government for approval. Construction is expected to start after the monsoon season.
Interestingly, these companies have previously worked on other large projects, which include the Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Bullet Train project, and the Mumbai Pune Motorway augmentation project, which is currently under development.
The MMRDA has secured over INR 1 lakh crore in funding for the construction of 37 projects in the MMR. Much of the INR 50,301 crore originally intended for these projects has been obtained from the Power Finance Corporation (PFC). Once these projects are completed within the next five years, vehicles from outside the city will not have to use local roads. This will ease the traffic load by over 50%.
