Earlier, the state government had decided to allot permanent houses to slum dwellers who have been residing in illegal houses since 2000. Henceforth, the state will allot permanent houses to those who have been residing in illegal houses between 2000 and 2011. The decision was taken in the winter session of the Maharashtra assembly.

On Sunday, it was decided that around 3.5 lakh hutments will be spared from demolition which were built between 2000 and 2011. Currently, slum dwellers who built their houses by the year 2000 and under the SRA scheme are eligible to get new houses.

However, between 2001 and 2011, number of illegal owners grew more than legal owners due to which many of the projects got stalled. Now, the state will take construction cost from illegal slum dwellers and in return, they will give them permanent houses.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis gave a New Year’s gift to slum dwellers. This will benefit a lot of slum dwellers as they will get permanent houses to stay. We will get in touch with every slum dweller and will inform about our decision.”
