The Government of India (GoI) recently formed a high-level committee to discuss the relief package for the losses faced by the Maharashtra government, due to the cyclone faced earlier in June 2020. After thorough discussion, the officials approved a relief package of INR 268.59 crore which CM Uddhav Thackeray-led government in the state criticised later during the day.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the committee and offered the funds which are expected to be used for relief assistance and to recover the losses faced due to the cyclone. However, reacting to the same, the State Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar stated that the amount was not enough.

Upon receiving this amount, Wadettiwar stated that the treatment given to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government is unfair, not appropriate and step-mother like. Adding more the said that the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) should not forget about the 105 MLAs given by the state.

As per reports, Maharashtra faced losses worth more than INR 6,000 crore and has requested the Centre for INR 1,040 crore as assistance.

Cyclone Nisarga was one of the challenges faced by the state government this year, amidst the coronavirus crisis. Maharashtra was one of the worst affected states with COVID19 and the cyclonic storm added to the worries, eventually damaging more than two lakh houses. Data reveals that around 2,285 houses and12,000 hectares of crops and orchards on the agricultural land were damaged. While the cyclone-affected the cities, the worst effect was faced in parts of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigad districts

Apart from Maharashtra, the Centre also announced relief assistance to five other states — West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Sikkim — which also suffered damages caused by cyclones, floods and landslides during the year. The collective relief assistance announced to these states on Friday was for INR 4,381.88 crore.
