Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday lashed out at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar for his opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).
Speaking on NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s anti-CAA, NRC and NPR stand, Devendra Fadnavis in Navi Mumbai’s Nerul said that the BJP government in the centre was facing a “perception war” from Pawar.
“NCP chief Sharad Pawar is playing a perception war against the BJP-led Union government. He is deliberately creating confusion over CAA. Misinformation regarding CAA is being spread. It is being said that CAA will take away the citizenship,” BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said.
Fadnavis was speaking on the second day of state-level convention organised by the party in Navi Mumbai’s Nerul. The BJP leaders met for the first time after the party failed to form government in Maharashtra despite being the single largest party in state assembly polls.
The Narendra Modi government is witnessing massive protests against the newly amended citizenship law. The constitutionalists have said that the CAA is fundamentally discriminatory against the Muslim community.

Sharad Pawar has called the CAA as “divisive” and has been vocal in opposing the new law. The NCP has also maintained its strong objection to the implementation of NRC and NPR in Maharashtra.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has also expressed his opposition to implementing NRC stating that poor and the marginalised will not be able to produce their documents. However, the official stand of the Maharashtra government on the implementation of NPR is not yet clear.
However, Fadnavis said that the opposition should either prove their claims that CAA will affect poor and Adivasis in Maharashtra or they should apologise to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Moreover, Fadnavis announced that BJP will contest the upcoming elections in Maharashtra alone and will register its first success in the upcoming Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) polls in April this year.
