Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC Pravin Darekar has been elected as the leader of the opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative council. Darekar is said to be a close aide of Former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
LoP in Maharashtra legislative assembly, Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the Darekar’s name for LoP in the legislative council. In the list, BJP MLA Sujit Singh Thakur and Bhai Girkar were also named.
After Fadnavis’ election as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly, all eyes were focused on the election of LoP in the legislative council.
For the post, several names including Suresh Dhas, Sujir Singh Thakur, Bhai Girkar and Panakaja Munde were listed. However, Darekar was chosen as the LoP in the legislative council.
Earlier, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dhananjay Munde held the post of LoP in Maharashtra legislative council. The winter session of the Maharashtra legislature is underway in Nagpur.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Minister and Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai were elected as the leader of the legislative council by chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar.
Pravin Darekar started his political career with Shiv Sena but shifted his loyalties to Maharashtra Navnriman Sena (MNS) in 2009. Darekar was elected as an MLA in 2009 on MNS ticket but lost in 2014 amid Modi wave.

After his loss in 2014, Darekar switched loyalties to BJP. Currently, Darekar is an MLC.
