Devendra Fadnavis, Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, on Wednesday alleged that cases of assault on women at COVID-19 care centres have been increasing in the state.
The BJP leader in a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray alleged that despite several complaints, the state government have not been taking adequate action to make sure that such incidents do not occur in the future. Fadnavis further stated that the issue should be taken seriously and an SOP should be formulated to protect the safety of women in these COVID-19 care centres.
The former Chief Minister also spoke about the issue of crimes against women in general and pointed out the fact that the Shiv Sena government, spearheaded by Uddhav Thackeray, had promised to bring in a law on the lines of `Disha Act' in Andhra Pradesh.
In the month of February, there were at least seven incidents of burning of women in the state. The incidents took place in Hinganghat, Sillod, Panvel, Mira Road, Latur, Nagpur and Lasalgaon. The direction law was later discussed in the media and over time the proposal was shelved. Incidents of rape at Panvel Quarantine Center, molestation by a security guard at Sinhagad, molestation at Mahivarang by a girl at a Government Quarantine Center in Chandrapur, etc, have taken place all in a month’s time.
Moreover, similar unfortunate incidents have also occurred in places like Mantha-Jalna, Mauje Karanjvihire-Pune, Nandura-Buldhana, Tambadi-Roha, Pabal-Pune, Karad, Aurangabad, Chandrapur, Jalgaon, Ratnagiri, Dharavi, Mankhurd and Mumbai.
