Madan Sharma, the retired Navy officer who was beaten up by Shiv Sena workers, has demanded the resignation of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The 62-year-old was attacked by a group of Sena workers led by Kamlesh Kadam for sharing a cartoon on WhatsApp.
Kadam is the shakha pramukh of Shiv Sena’s Kandivali unit in Mumbai. The cartoon shared by Sharma depicted Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar.
“I am injured and stressed. The attack on me is saddening. I will like to tell Uddhav Thackeray that if you can't look after law and order then resign and let people decide who should look after it,” Sharma said while talking to the media.
The ex-navy officer has demanded police security for him and his family fearing that he might be attacked again. He also said that Shiv Sena and the Chief Minister should ensure that such an attack doesn’t happen again and has demanded an apology.
Sharma further informed that he would have been arrested after the attack if Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar wouldn’t have intervened. Sharma’s daughter along with a few BJP leaders protested outside the office of Additional Commissioner of Police demanding those who attacked to be booked under non-bailable offences.
On September 12, Mumbai Police arrested Shiv Sena leader Kamlesh Kadam and five others after an FIR was registered. However, they were released on bail later. The opposition has demanded strict action against those who attacked the ex-navy officer.
Earlier, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also spoke to Sharma and expressed his disappointment. Singh said that attacks on ex-servicemen were unacceptable and deplorable.
