Bhushan Gagrani, the district election officer and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner, has announced that mobile phones will not be allowed within 100 meters of polling booths during the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly Elections.
This decision follows guidelines of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Gagrani said that voting regulations for the Assembly elections will be the same as those during the previous Lok Sabha elections.
He explained that discussions were held with the ECI, but they were clear about this rule. Voters are advised to make arrangements and leave their mobile devices outside polling stations. He also mentioned that new voters can register until October 19.
Gagrani posted the election schedule for the 36 Mumbai constituencies after the ECI revealed the official polling dates for the upcoming elections. In total, 10,071 polling stations will be set up in Mumbai, with 2,537 in the island city and 7,574 in the suburbs.
A total of 76,47,967 voters are registered in Mumbai, with Wadala having the fewest voters, with 2.04 lakh, and Chandivali the most, with 4.46 lakh.
Polling station layouts in Mumbai have been revised too. Voter distribution has also been adjusted, with polling stations now handling between 1,000 and 1,200 voters each, compared to the earlier average of 1,500.
Over 40,000 police and civic staff will be deployed for safe and efficient voting. This includes 2,500 police officers, 21,000 police personnel, and 32 companies of the state reserve police force. Approximately 15,000 civic staff members are also engaged in election-related duties.
In addition to these measures, voters have access to helpline services. They can reach out to the Mumbai City Collector's Office at 022-20822781 or the Mumbai Suburban Collector's Office at 1800262910. For additional support, the Election Control Room can be contacted at 7977363304.
