Residents of the chawl are demanding the BIT chawls at Mumbai Central should be redeveloped on the lines of BDD chawls and for that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) should set a policy and issue tenders. Meanwhile, they have decided to boycott the assembly elections.
Efforts to redevelop 19 buildings of BIT at Mumbai Central have been going on since 2006. But so far many controversies have arisen in it. Therefore, the redevelopment of these chawls has been stopped for many years. There are two associations of residents in this chawl group, out of which the residents' organisation BIT Chawl Seva Sangh has recently protested and warned to boycott the election.
As all the BIT chawls in Mumbai have completed 100 years, the residents have demanded that BIT chawls should be redeveloped as per the redevelopment policy of BDD chawls. This organisation has opposed the proposal of showing the old consent form. The residents of chawl have been demanding for the past several months that the municipal administration itself should invite tenders and select the developer. But since the municipal administration is ignoring it, the chawl residents have taken this stance.
