Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam on Friday wrote to CM Devendra Fadnavis urging him to dissolve the BMC, a corrupt institution claiming lives of innumerable citizens every year. Nirupam also pointed out the nexus between the Building proposal Department which is headed by BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and the builders which paves a way to all the illegal construction in the city.
"The richest Municipal Corporation of Asia has become hollow due to rising corruption. The landslide at Wadala’s Lloyd Estate has exposed the illegal excavation being carried out by Dosti Realty at the site of the accident. While the residents of Lloyd estate are scared for their lives, the BMC and the ruling party have been making attempts to protect the culprits. This isn’t the only case of negligence by the BMC. Repeated fire incidents across the city have exposed the violation of fire norms by the BMC. Mumbai comes to a standstill within few hours of rains only because of lack of proper measures taken by the BMC. They are playing with the lives of the citizens of Mumbai and Chief Minister’s silence over the entire incident shows that he has simply given up on Mumbai,” said Sanjay Nirupam.
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing Mumbai as the cleanest city in India Sanjay Nirupam said, “This is yet another joke played by the BJP Govt on the Mumbaikars. How can the PM declare Mumbai as the cleanest city in India if the city generates 9000 metric tons of garbage every day out of which only 7000 metric tons is disposed of? The city is stuck with 2000 tons of garbage every day. Heaps of garbage strewn all over the city is a common sight. The condition of Mumbai is completely opposite to being the cleanest city in the country”.
Asking the CM to take stringent actions against the BMC, Sanjay Nirupam has requested the appointment of a sitting judge to investigate the rampant corruption in the functioning of the BMC within a frame of 6 months. He has also demanded suspension of BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta along with an inquiry commission set up to probe his various acts of omission and commission. The Mumbai Congress Chief also pointed out at the need of appointing an administrator to cleanse the rot in the system to prevent any fatal accidents in the city.
