Despite objection from allies in Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Shiv Sena has supported the centre’s decision to grant Padma Shri to Pakistan-born singer Adnan Sami.

While talking to the media, Shiv Sena MP Gajanan Kirtikar that the conferring of Padma Shri involves a detailed inquiry on all the expected names listed for the prestigious award.

The Padma Shri award process has no scope for “arbitrariness”, Kirtikar added while stating that there was no need for objection over Adnan Sami being granted the prestigious award.

"There is a detailed nationwide inquiry during the process for granting Padma Shri award. The recommendation from the state and organisation the expected awardee hails from is required. The decision to grant the Padma award is taken only after an inquiry,” a report in Republic World quoted Kirtikar.

Gajanan Kirtikar, who is a Shiv Sena MP in Lok Sabha, further stated that there is no need to object to the decision as there is no arbitrariness while making such decisions.

However, Congress and NCP have raised strong objection over Narendra Modi government’s decision to confer Adnan Sami with Padma Shri award.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Nawab Malik labelled the centre’s decision to grant Padma Shri to Adnan Sami as an “insult” to the people of India.

The minister stated that this move by the Modi government was a “damage control exercise” amid the ongoing protests across the country over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Congress has also opposed the decision of centre to grant Padma Shri to Adnan Sami. The party released a video which stated that Indian Army’s Mohammad Sanaullah who fought in Kargil against Pakistan was excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which happened in Assam.

On the other hand, Adnan Sami whose father was an officer in Pakistani Air force and fought against India was granted Padma Shri, Congress said.
