Eknath Shinde stepped down as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday and was subsequently appointed as the caretaker chief minister by Governor CP Radhakrishnan.

Shinde, accompanied by his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, visited the Raj Bhavan to meet the Governor as the Maharashtra Assembly's term concluded today. However, the question of who will assume the role of the next chief minister remains unresolved.

The BJP-led ruling Mahayuti coalition secured a resounding victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections, dashing the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi's hopes of reclaiming power.

Despite the decisive win, the formation of the new government has been delayed due to the Shiv Sena’s demand for Eknath Shinde to remain as Chief Minister.

The Mahayuti alliance, consisting of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, retained control by winning 230 out of 288 assembly seats, leaving the Aghadi with a mere 46 seats.
