Council of Ministers, in a cabinet meeting, took the decision to construct affordable homes on the land available in Mumbai’s Mithagar. However, Shiv Sena leader and Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam on Wednesday strongly opposed the decision.
Few days back, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced the Mumbai Development Plan (DP) 2034, introduced by the state government. As per the plan, the BMC is expected to create one million affordable houses utilising the salt pan lands in the city. Of the 721 hectares land, 130 hectares will be utilised for the construction of the houses. Many environmentalists have shown their resentment to the same. The Salt pan lands act as the natural barrier for the water during monsoon.
Kadam said that “If there is a need for land to build houses, the government should search for the land which went unused after the cancellation of the ULC Act (High Land Retention Act, 1976) and raise the buildings there. The government should not take steps to harm the environment.”
He also questioned the government and said that “want to give the sea to builders too?”
Congress’ Sanjay Nirupam and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray also expressed their disappointment on the same and the Sena chief said that the people should have space to breath freely.
