Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut will attend the opposition leaders’ meeting called by Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday to discuss the ongoing COVID-19 situation in the country.

Congress has sent the invitation to 18 parties in the opposition to the centre including the left parties and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC). Moreover, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar is also likely to attend the meeting.

This will be the first meeting of opposition parties led by Congress which will be attended by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray who first met Sonia Gandhi after the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) came to power in the state.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi will lead the online session of the opposition meeting with the heads of 18 opposition parties to discuss the COVID-19 handling of Narendra Modi government and the ongoing migrant crisis at large.

According to sources in Shiv Sena, the party is yet to decide on the issues that will be taken up in the meeting. However, Uddhav Thackeray might raise the problems of funds from the centre.

Although Shiv Sena is not part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the regional party has exited the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after Arvind Sawant resigned from the cabinet post in the Narendra Modi government due to the post-election drama between Sena and BJP in November 2019.

Sawant resigned as a Union Minister alleging that the BJP failed to honour the promise of sharing equal power in Maharashtra.

Earlier, in January, Congress called a meeting of the opposition parties amid the countrywide outrage against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). However, Uddhav Thackeray didn’t attend the meeting and cited “miscommunication” as the reason. However, days later, Shiv Sena MLA Aaditya Thackeray met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Their meeting was termed “informal” by Shiv Sena.

The meeting of the opposition parties will also discuss the economic package announced by the centre to revive economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.
