Mumbai: BEST resume services for general public from today, June 7; No standees allowed

The decision was taken hours after the Maharashtra government released a five phase unlock plan across the state. However, Mumbai falls under tier three, accordingly, the BMC has released the fresh guidelines to be followed from June 7.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) on Saturday evening, June 5 announced that the local bus service will resume for all in Mumbai from Monday, June 7. However, the number of passengers will not be more than the total number of seats on any bus.

The decision was taken hours after the Maharashtra government released a five-phase unlock plan across the state. However, Mumbai falls under tier three, accordingly, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has released the fresh guidelines to be followed from June 7.

An official released by the transport body read: “The BEST has been allowed to carry passengers with full seating capacity and no standing passengers will be allowed. Besides, wearing of face mask will be mandatory for every passenger.”

Moreover, the BEST official also stated that they will be introducing additional buses from today, June 7, in order to cater to the increasing number of passengers.

Amid the second wave of coronavirus, the state government, under the 'Break The Chain' initiative, had not suspended the city’s public transport but had imposed strict restrictions in April. Earlier, only 50 per cent seating capacity was allowed on BEST buses.

Meanwhile, as per the fresh guidelines released by the state government, the local train services will remain closed for the general public.

According to the state's public health department, on Sunday, June 6, COVID-19 cases continue to decline in Maharashtra as only 12,557 fresh infections were recorded.
