The Mumbai division of Western Railway (WR) has imposed speed restrictions between Ram Mandir-Goregaon-Malad Section of 30km/h due to ongoing 5th & 6th line construction with effect from Monday, September 30, 2024.
In an official statement, the railways said that this restriction will be relaxed in a phased manner, and by October 4, 2024, suburban services will return to normal, except during block periods.
Due to this, about 150-175 trains will be cancelled. It is pertinent to note that a total of 1,394 services are operated by WR over the Mumbai Suburban Section.

Consequently, commuters faced significant inconvenience during peak hours as Mumbai local trains on the Western Railway line were delayed by 10 to 15 minutes.
Additionally, due to the unavailability of the Goregaon Loop Line on Monday, all four fast Goregaon morning services were cancelled for the day. Meanwhile, at Malad station, Churchgate-bound fast trains will now arrive at platform number 3, which has been renumbered as platform 4.
These decisions were taken to maintain the train’s daily schedule owing to a speed restriction of 30 kmph being imposed on all four railway lines between Ram Mandir and Malad stations.
Moreover, to facilitate the construction of the 6th Line between Goregaon and Kandivali Stations, a block of 4 hrs will be taken on the UP & DOWN Fast lines at Goregaon and UP & DOWN Fast & Slow lines at Malad on the intervening night of 30th September/1st October 2024.

Currently, there are four lines operating between Churchgate-Marine Lines and Borivli-Virar, with a fifth connecting Mumbai Central to Borivali and a sixth between Khar and Goregaon. The sixth line is expected to be extended to Borivali by 2025.
The fifth and sixth lines are a critical infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion on the crowded suburban network.
The new line will provide dedicated up and down tracks, improving train movement and enhancing the punctuality of services.
The changes are expected to significantly benefit commuters and streamline train operations in the long term.
