After 41 days of disturbance, Western Railway (WR) has opened a new sixth line between Goregaon and Kandivali on Tuesday, October 8. This line is meant for long-distance trains. On the first day of operations, 14 long-distance trains used the new track.

The new line is 4.54 kilometres long and extends from Bandra and runs parallel to an existing fifth line. Both lines will now serve long-distance trains, keeping them separate from local suburban trains. This will reduce travel delays for many commuters in Mumbai. It is expected to speed up travel and prevent halts.

Additionally, WR is planning to extend the sixth line from Kandivali to Borivali. Around 15% of this work is already complete. The rest of the work will be done by March 2025, after relocating encroachers and project-affected persons from the area.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) approved the usage of the new track in a letter. The letter also mentioned that Western Railway must meet a 20-point requirement. This will make sure that trains can run at a speed of 95 kilometres per hour on this route.

The letter also raised the following concerns:

  1. The letter addressed the issue of encroachments near the tracks. The railway will have to build fences or boundary walls in certain areas to prevent trespassing.

  2. CRS also raised concerns regarding signalling and telecom cables. At Goregaon station, some cables were found buried under cement concrete. This makes them difficult to repair.

  3. The letter also noted that one of the signal boxes was corroded. It highlighted scattered rail materials, worn-out cables, and poor condition of other equipment.

  4. CRS also pointed out unfinished work in Malad station, such as levelling platforms, installing water taps, and completing tactile flooring. A temporary platform will be built on the west side of the Malad station in the next three months.

Western Railway acknowledged these issues and promised to address them quickly.
