4 arrested at Mumbai airport, currency seized

Mumbai - On Tuesday night on specific intelligence, AIU Mumbai Customs intercepted 3 passengers Shaik Waheed Ali, Mohammed Sohail and Shaikh Yousuf Pasha who were coming from Hyderabad to Mumbai by a Spicejet flight SG 468. Detailed examination of checked-in baggage of Shaik Waheed Ali resulted in a recovery of 1,39,000 Saudi Riyals, 56,500 UAE Dirhams and 14,000 Australian Dollars worth INR 43,97,350. These notes were wrapped in newspapers & cleverly concealed. 
Passengers in their statements recorded under section 108 of the Customs Act, 62 have stated that they brought the said foreign currency from Saudi Arabia during their visit last week but didn't declare the same to the Customs on their arrival to India. Further, they came to Mumbai for conversion of said foreign currency expecting good rates/ returns. A case has been registered under FEMA, 2000.
In another case, on Tuesday night, AIU on suspicion intercepted a passenger Arif Koyante holding Indian passport who was departing to Dubai by Spicejet flight. Detailed examination of his checked-in-baggage resulted in a recovery of Rs. 25 Lakh in the denomination of Rs. 2000 which was concealed in 52 envelopes made of white paper. The passenger has admitted of possession, carriage, concealment and recovery of said currency. A case has been booked and the passenger has been arrested.
