The son of a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) worker was murdered in Malad East, a western suburb of Mumbai. Nine men who assaulted the victim have been identified and arrested.

The 27-year-old Akash Maeen was with his parents when he was brutally beaten and killed following a dispute for speedy overtaking in Dindoshi. The incident took place on Saturday, October 12.

The victim, owner of a travel agency, moved to Hyderabad in January 2024 with his wife Lavina (30), and had come to Mumbai to gift his parents a car for Dussehra. The couple was to return to Hyderabad on Sunday after taking delivery of their newly purchased Maruti Ertiga. Akash was married seven months ago.

A purported video of the brutal incident surfaced on the social media where a mob was seen kicking and beating the man, while his mother laid over his body to protect him from the mob. His father was also severely injured. Akash was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The man is seen in a video being thrashed by a group of men while his father tries to push them away. In a desperate attempt to protect him; while Akash's mother lay over his body, like a shield.

Maeen and his family left his parents’ house in Malad East for the car dealer’s showroom. Maeen and his wife travelled on their motorcycle while the parents took an auto-rickshaw. On reaching the showroom, they were told that there was some problem with their RTO registration and the delivery of the car would thus be delayed. The family turned back and was returning home when the incident took place at around 6.30 pm.

At Shivaji Chowk, an autorickshaw driver identified as Avinash Kadam (30) overtook the bike, almost brushing the bike. Akash and the auto driver had a heated exchange of words after the former confronted him and the latter started abusing in front if his passengers. The auto driver then stopped his vehicle ahead of the bike to make it halt and continued abusing the victim.

Police said Akash had fought back after the driver misbehaved with his wife. Later, Kadam had called up and gathered a mob of 10-15 men. During this argument, Akash allegedly manhandled the driver and two of the accused persons, who suffered injuries. Following this, the autorickshaw driver and his two friends, along with a few others, assaulted him, a senior police officer told The Indian Express.

His father Dattatreya managed to call the police emergency number '100'. A police van arrived and took a couple of attackers into custody while the rest fled.

The victim’s mother Deepali and Dattatreya rushed an unconscious Akash to Balasaheb Thackeray TraumaCare Hospital.

The Dindoshi Police registered a case against Kadam and others on the complaint of the deceased’s wife. With the help of CCTV footage, the police arrested the nine accused, six of whom have been identified as Avinash Namdev Kadam, Amit Joginder Vishwakarma, Aditya Dinesh Singh, Jayaprakash Deepak Amte, Rakesh Malku Dhawale and Sahil Sikandar Kadam.

The police also recovered the stone used by the accused in the murder.

“He was kicked and punched, leaving him with serious injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died. Based on CCTV footage, we held six persons on Sunday and three on Monday. They have been charged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and other offences. All the accused were produced in the court. Later, the court sent all of them to police custody till October 22,” news agency ANI quoted Mumbai Police statement.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
