The Maharashtra government has mandated all schools in the state, both private and public, to teach Marathi from the academic year 2025–2026. The government also declared that exams for Marathi will shift from the current grade-based evaluation to a marks-based system. This was announced in a GR on Saturday, September 14.

Earlier, it was found that the Marathi language was not being taken seriously in non-Marathi medium schools, where it was graded rather than marked. The new marks-based system will address this issue. This will make sure that students engage more seriously with the subject.

The Education Department issued an order mandating Marathi instruction in all medium schools on April 1, 2020. However, in the 2020–2021 academic year, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the implementation of this plan. Regular exams were not held that year in many schools, except for the State Board schools.

In April 2023, the department temporarily announced a grading system for Marathi instead of the marking system. This exception was made for the eighth grade batch of students in non-state-board schools. That batch was allowed to continue with the grading system for 2 more sessions into the ninth grade in 2023-2024 and the tenth grade in 2024-2025.

The new government resolution confirmed that it was a temporary measure due to the pandemic. It will end after the 2024–2025 batch completes Class 10. From the 2025–2026 academic year, the marks-based system will come back to the Marathi language board exams.

Recently, the Maharashtra government also declared the establishment of a Marathi Gymkhana in South Mumbai. It will follow the example of other community clubs like the Islam Gymkhana and Parsi Gymkhana.

There are also plans for the construction of a Marathi Language Department building at Marine Lines. The minister of School Education and Marathi language, Deepak Kesarkar, shared this on Friday, September 13.
