An argument over the use of Marathi in Mumbra, Thane, caused tension in the community on Thursday, January 2. The incident occurred when a Marathi youth named Vishal got into an argument with a vegetable vendor. Vishal asked the vendor to speak in Marathi. The vendor refused and insisted on using Hindi. This led to a heated argument.
The situation escalated when locals and other vendors supported the seller. They accused Vishal of disrupting peace in the area. Later, he was seen apologising publicy.

Vishal was later charged with a non-cognisable offence for disturbing the peace. As per reports, he was allowed to leave after the charge. Vishal's mother told reporters that her son was mentally unstable. She requested the authorities to avoid taking strict action against him.
The police arrested more than 20 people for causing a disturbance at the police station. These individuals demanded action against Vishal for his remarks during the argument with the vendor.
The viral video also prompted a reaction from Avinash Jadhav, the Thane Chief of the Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS). He criticised the incident, asking, "Speaking Marathi in Maharashtra is a crime now?" He warned that such incidents could alienate Marathi-speaking people.
