In connection to an election petition filed by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Vinayak Raut demanding the cancellation of Rane’s election victory from the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg constituency, the Bombay High Court summoned BJP MP Narayan Rane on Friday.

Summons was issued by a single-judge bench of Justice Sarang V Kotwal. Rane and other respondents including election authorities have been asked to appear before the Court on September 12 to answer Raut’s claims.

Raut who filed his plea through advocate Asim Sarode, claimed that Rane won the Lok Sabha elections by “fraudulent means” and hence the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg seat be cancelled and he should be banned from contesting elections and voting for five years. Raut also sought directions to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct a re-election for the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg Lok Sabha seat.

Raut claimed that following his campaigning, a video came out of Rane’s supporters distributing money to voters by showing them an EVM and asking them to vote for Rane.

Raut further alleged that on April 13, Narayan Rane’s son MLA Nitesh Rane held a public meeting where voters were threatened that they would not get funds if they don’t elect the BJP candidate. “It was a direct threat to voters and disturbed the free and fair election process,” the plea claimed.
